A Jew Must Die
Dir. Jacob Berger
East Coast Premiere
Popular myth holds that Switzerland remained an innocent bystander during WWII. Famed writer Jacques Chessex powerfully repudiates this notion when—after a lengthy period of silence—he shares what he witnessed as a young boy.
In the small Swiss town of Payerne, Nazi sympathizers singled out a Jewish scapegoat—a wealthy livestock dealer (Bruno Ganz) —to serve as an “example” in honor of Hitler’s birthday. The film boldly conflates past and present (don’t be surprised to see a modern car on 1942 roads) suggesting that the two are, and always will be, dangerously intertwined.
