Dir. Safinez Bousbia (88min, Algeria/Ireland/France, 2011)
In Arabic and French with English Subtitles
Disbanded by the 1954 Algerian Revolution, an orchestra of young Jews and Muslims in the city of Algiers went silent for sixty years. That is, until filmmaker Safinez Bousbia fell in love with their infectious Chaabi music – Sephardic Spanish rhythms with Arabic sound. She brought the El Gusto orchestra back together, its members 70 to 100 years old, for a joyful reunion and a wildly successful musical tour of Europe, reminiscent of The Buena Vista Social Club.
Playing as part of the Washington Jewish Music Festival.
