Rosenblum: In Search of Pitt Street |
| An
intimate portrait of an important American photographer by his daughter,
an accomplished filmmaker in her own right. Walter Rosenblum was born into
the poverty of the Lower East Side but his interest in photography led him
to the famous New York Photo League where he studied under Lewis Hine and
Paul Strand. During World War II he was trained in filmmaking and landed
on Omaha Beach on D-Day where he photographed the landing under fire. When
the movie photographer on his three-man team was killed he took over the
job and filmed the searing images from the liberation of Dachau. The
experience of war gave all of Rosenblum’s work that followed a deep
humanitarian angle. His photos of Spanish Civil War refugees, Haitians
living under Papa "Doc" Duvalier, Astoria, Queens, the Lower
East Side and East Harlem are part of a career that represents a search
for community, humanity and the triumph of the human spirit. |
