20,000 Jews were able to elude extermination at the hands of the Nazis by
fleeing to the open port of Shanghai during World War II. However, escape
did not mean an end to their troubles, as this moving documentary recounts
the very real struggles they encountered living in a city controlled by
the Japanese, surrounded by an alien culture. Rare footage from home
movies shot in Shanghai helps tell the story of four people who lived
through that time. At first the Jewish refugees settled in an area of town
known as "Little Vienna" and attempted to recreate their
European culture with cafes, tailor shops and intellectual publications.
Eventually, they were forced into the Hongkew Ghetto, where conditions of
poverty and disease, which were the norm for the Japanese occupation in
China, were harsh. Ultimately a story of survival and passage to freedom,
the film features interviews with those who found refuge in Shanghai and
remember it with bittersweet affection. |
