Set in a working-class London neighborhood in 1960, David is a young Jewish boy with a passion for cricket, despite his klutzy ineptitude at the sport.  When a Jamaican family moves in next-door, David is thrilled when they install a cricket green in the backyard.  He immediately befriends them and gets remedial cricket tutoring from Dennis, the father.  However, the other neighbors – mostly white Christians – are significantly less pleased by the new diversity of their community.  A moving coming-of-age tale set against resonant themes of race, class and ethnicity.
