Princesse Marie
Sunday, December 5 4:15 pm at AFI Silver Theater Monday, December 6 12:00pm at Washington DCJCC France, 2004, BetaSP 185 minutes French and German with English subtitles Director: Benoit Jacquot US PREMIERE Catherine Deneuve stars as Marie Bonaparte, grand-niece of Napoleon and princess of Greece and Denmark. In the 1920s, suffering from “frigidity,” she travels to Vienna to begin a new experimental form of treatment, psychoanalysis with Dr. Sigmund Freud. Their doctor-patient relationship eventually transforms into a twenty-year friendship, during which Princess Marie served as Freud's disciple, patron and after the rise of the Nazis, protector – at one point personally retrieving Anna Freud from Gestapo detention. Deneuve sparkles both in the intimate scenes depicting her psychoanalysis and in the powerful moments where the Princess' dominating and eccentric personality make her a formidable heroine. Co-sponsored by the Embassy of France and the Alliance Francaise de Washington, DC
