Le Grand Role
Saturday, December 11
6:00 pm at AFI Silver Theatre
France , 2004, 35mm 89 minutes English and French with English subtitles Director: Steve Suissa A follow-up to director Steve Suissa's 1999 film Taking Wing, (WJFF 2001) presents us with a similar group of Parisian-Jewish actors, now older, more mature and still struggling for their big break. When the famous American director Grichenberg (Peter Coyote in a dead-on Spielberg impression) comes to Paris looking to cast the role of Shylock for his all-Yiddish production of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, Maurice gets the part. But with this momentary triumph comes a greater challenge when Maurice is replaced in the production by a famous American star and he seeks to conceal his dismissal from his critically-ill wife.
