Geva’s grandmother was a survivor of the 1929 Hebron massacre. After the
birth of her first child, Noit’s father gave her a copy of her
grandmother’s account of the massacre which she had written the day
after it happened. At the top of the page were the words, "What I Saw
in Hebron" and what followed was a terrifying account of how numerous
Jews, including her father, were murdered by rioting Arabs, and also how
an Arab acquaintance saved her life. Curious, Noit’s research located 12
survivors who speak on film, for the first time about what happened. The
story of the massacre is part of the larger, tragic history of Hebron,
which included a time before the massacres when Jews and Arabs co-existed
peacefully. The many complex reasons for the disintegration of that peace
and the explosion of Hebron as one of the most hostile flash points in the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict is handled by the filmmakers with subtlety
and without ideological blinders favoring any side. An unforgettable
documentary, carefully shot and edited with sensitivity. |
