| The Happiest Place on Earth
is based on the true story of a film production that was begun during
the Nazi occupation of France. Obscure documentary-maker Vignault and his
producer Couperin don’t refuse when they are pressured by a Fascist
official to transform their planned documentary about Mermoz, a famous
French aviator, into a feature film. Set to begin shooting, they are
called into the Bureau of Jewish Affairs and asked to remove several
characters including Antoine de St. Exupery (the author of The Little
Prince) on the grounds that he has been sympathetic to the Jews. So
begins the first of many obstacles in the process of making the film, a
farce which grows more menacing with each incident. The film includes a
script co-written by Jean-Claude Grumberg who also co-wrote Francois
Truffaut’s The Last Metro.
