| A critical
success at this year’s Cannes Film
Festival, Genesis is a poetic,
sometimes brutal and visually stirring interpretation of Chapters 23
through 37 of the first book of the Bible. The film features an excellent
cast of African actors including Malinese singer and international pop
star Salif Keita in the role of Esau who at the start of the film is
planning revenge against his brother Jacob for stealing his birthright.
Jacob sits at home, deep in mourning for the loss of his favorite son,
Joseph. His other sons meanwhile are tangling with Hamor the Canaanite
whose son wishes to marry their sister Dinah. The exogamous conflict leads
to a bloody confrontation evocative of the sectarian violence which has
plagued the modern world as well as the biblical. The harsh desert
wilderness provides an appropriate backdrop for a film with an epic scope
and a universal message about brotherhood and humanity.
