The Cemetery Club
- Hebrew and Polish with English subtitles
-
Every Saturday, at approximately ten in the morning, you’ll find a group of elderly men and women shlepping plastic lawn chairs across the Mount Herzl National Cemetery in Jerusalem. They set up in the shade of a large pine tree, sit down, and have long, animated and thoughtful discussions about larger issues. This group of oldsters has held meetings of the “Mt. Herzl Academy” for over two decades, debating and discussing everything from the history of modern philosophy to poetry. (As expected, they share a Shabbat lunch after their discussion!) Writer/Director Tali Shemesh focuses on two members, her Grandma Minya, and her Great Aunt Lena. The two women have an intense and often difficult relationship – they are two extremely different women – yet both have suffered the loss of the men they loved. As the Mt. Herzl Academy numbers dwindle, we are privy to the conflicts within the group, and specifically those between Minya and Lena. Shemesh has created a poignant and intimate portrait of both her family and members of the Holocaust generation.
