When 14 women—secular Israelis, Palestinians, Bedouin Arabs, and religious settlers in the West Bank—are brought together with the shared goal of losing weight, they find out they have far more in common than they ever would have imagined. A Slim Peace takes a revealing look at an encounter between women who are seldom brought together in the same room. By giving them a topic to focus on other than the conflicts between their groups, a modicum of trust is established that allows friendships to form and honest opinions to be shared. Rather than a distraction from the conflict, this film focuses on the human connections that are possible and indeed necessary if conflict is ever to be resolved. Filmmaker Yael Luttwak skillfully portrays the very real possibilities and obstacles to peace when the conversation shifts to counting carbs.
