Set in turn-of-the-century rural Poland, The Dybbuk is a luminous retelling of the famous Yiddish folktale of a wandering soul in search of an earthly body. When a matrimonial promise binding a yeshiva student and a young woman is betrayed by the girl's father, the wrath of the spiritual world is unleashed upon the entire shtetl. Employing the untold power of the Kabbala, the Jewish book of Mysticism, the student conspires to free his own soul from his body and then inhabit the form of his beloved. Much like in William Friedkin's The Exorcist, the great Rebbe of the region is called in to dispel this wayward soul. Produced for Polish television, this feverish film, directed by Agnieszka Holland (Europa, Europa; Olivier, Olivier; and The Secret Garden), should not be missed.
