| A
nostalgic tale of first love, childhood and political upheaval in the
cultural mixing bowl of the Bulgarian Balkans where at one time Armenians,
Greeks, Gypsies, Jews, Turks and ethnic Bulgarians lived side by
side. |
|
|
| The
film cuts between present day Plovdiv, Bulgaria where Albert Cohen has
returned from Israel to his birthplace to visit and the same town in the
late 1940s when Communist hard-liners, opposed to religion and ethnic
nationalism, altered the town forever. Central to the story is Albert’s
young romance with Araxi, an Armenian girl from whom he has not heard
since he and his family left for Israel. They are reunited and, against
the new perils of unbridled capitalism that has followed the collapse of
Communism in their town, they seek to recover the past. |
